Signing with Penelope

On Saturday, I had a major communication breakthrough with Penelope. Awhile ago, Katie and I decided that we would try to introduce sign language as a bridge to talking.

That was fast

A few days ago I told you all about Penelope's cold and how we thought she got it from Katie. Well, our not so scientific new analysis is that she got it from day care, because Penelope has now given it to us! So, yes, within less than a week of starting day care, the whole family is sick. That was fast. Katie started feeling sick on Saturday, and was pretty miserable all of today (Sunday). I started feeling sick when I woke up this morning, and I'm hoping not to feel like Katie does tomorrow. Tonight we had matzo ball soup to help with the recovery process.

Washington, DC - November 2010

When:
October 30, 2010 to November 6, 2010

At the end of October, we took our first family trip with Penelope. I was going to do a write up about it, but Katie beat me to it with a post in her blog. I wanted to include some of the photo highlights, so I've copied most of her post and added some of my own thoughts and photos.

Daddy Fail

Well, the moment we have all been waiting for, the inevitable, happened today. Katie has always looked askance at the way I play with Penelope. I'm always careful, but I like to live on the edge, so to speak. Anyway, today, I decided to do some tummy time with Penelope. She has been getting good at holding herself seated with a little assistance. One time previously, I had positioned her so that she was sitting on her butt, but leaning forward on her arms and fists, kind of like a gorilla (a very cute gorilla).

She's on a roll

Rolling over, that is. Today, Katie went to yoga, and I stayed at home with Penelope. When Katie left, Penelope was enjoying being on her back on the play mat. Since she hadn't had any tummy time today, I flipped her over onto her belly and put her arms under her chest. She started looking around, and I went to put something away. When I came back, she was on her back! Since there was no one else to help her roll, it was clear that she did it herself. So, I put her back onto her chest to see if she could do it again. This time I watched her closely.

Preparing for "school"

Since Jason hasn't posted about this yet, I guess it is up to me. On Wednesday, we all went to visit Penelope's day care center. Finding day care for her was pretty stressful for us. We have been on lots of waitlists since early in my pregnancy. So, we were relieved to be offered a spot at a new center that is very close to where Jason works. Jason had gotten a quick tour when he dropped off our deposit, but Penelope and I hadn't seen it yet.

Penelope's six-pack abs

Ok, maybe Penelope doesn't have a six-pack, yet. But for the first time, we can now feel her abdominal muscles flexing. Granted, they are covered with a nice layer of fat, but they are definitely there. They are easiest to feel when she is being held in a seated position or when she is lying on her back and lifting her legs. When she flexes her abs, they feel rock hard. It's pretty awesome. I think we're going to start her on crunches soon. And I'm totally getting her a thigh-master for Christmas. Feel the burn, baby.

The first laugh

Penelope laughed today! She was on the changing table, which seems to be one of her favorite places. We were doing the standard smiles and baby flirting that she has gotten so good at, and then she giggled! I called Jason right away but he didn't believe me, but I heard it and I marked Penelope's calender with the first laugh sticker. She hasn't done it again today but maybe she is waiting for Jason to come home.

New address, better blog

Hello my few readers. When I first started my blog, I decided to put it on www.threeps.net (my "personal" website) rather than on www.katie-jason.net (our "family" website). At the time, this seemed to make sense. Well, I've finally convinced Katie to start contributing to the blog, and now it doesn't seem right for my posts and her posts to be in two different locations. So, for those of you who access these blog posts through www.threeps.net/blog, please update your bookmarks to www.katie-jason.net/blog. At this new address, you will see not just my posts, but also Katie's posts. (However, at least a few people, like my Mom, already get to my blog posts through links on katie-jason.net. These people don't need to change anything.)

Baby entertainment

Before I begin, I need to rant about Windows Updater. I had written much of this blog post and then my computer just shut all my programs and restarted! Grrr, I will do my best to recreate what I had before.
