Stumpy

It's OFF! Yesterday, Penelope's umbilical cord stump fell off. It was, of course, anti-climactic. Katie found it floating in her onesie. There are still a few bits of it stuck in her belly button, but the big chunk is gone. It kind of looks like jerky. Surprisingly, there was no odor, despite the doctor's warning that it would stink before it fell off. Now comes the debate about saving it or not. I'm for saving, mostly to see what happens to it, but Katie is not a huge fan of keeping a rotten piece of flesh around. Anyway, I'm excited because now I can take some stumpless photos of Penelope.

When we visited Sara and Olivia in San Antonio when Olivia was 2 months old, Olivia's umbilical cord stump was sitting on top of the dresser in her room. It was thoroughly dessicated. Sara said she and Clayton could not decide what to do with it, so it was just laying around until someone made a decision. Maybe burying it in the garden? Like they did in the old days with the placenta.

Or you could put it in a little pouch and make her a necklace out of it. (Just saw "August, Osage County" with Sam, and that's what one of the characters did with hers. I'm not sure you really want P to be like any of the characters in that play, though...)

Uh, no. I'm pretty sure that would fail the "that's nasty" test. Well, maybe the pouch would be OK, but not the necklace. And I agree, "August, Osage County" should not be used as a source of normal behavior. Any other suggestions out there?
