It's been a while since I posted anything, so I figured I should share a few little things from the past few weeks. The main news is that Seattle has been HOT! Not northeast humid hot (thank god), but 90+ hot nonetheless. However, the big problem with Seattle is that no one is really prepared for the heat, and now that we have a baby, I guess we fall into that category, too. This weekend, to escape the heat, we got in the car (with A/C) and drove to the mall (with A/C). We actually went to the mall because we needed something, but then we stayed there just to enjoy the cool air.

First Restaurant Outing = Success!

This evening, Katie, Kris, and I took Penelope on her first outing to a restaurant, and it was a complete success! We were not sure what the outcome would be at first, and were fully prepared to rotate baby-walking duty while the other two ate. Penelope impressed us all by staying asleep the entire dinner, and it was really nice to get all of us out of the house together. To keep the odds of success in our favor, we decided to go to Tutta Bella in Wallingford, perhaps the most kid and baby friendly restaurant ever.

Well, my honeymoon with Penelope had to end at some point. Now, it's time for me to go back to work, while Katie and her mom look after Penelope. Unfortunately for me, Penelope has just started to get more interesting. She has moved past just sleeping, eating, and diapering to being more alert and awake. She's starting to do a better job of looking at things, and her facial expressions have become more interesting. She even smiled at me, although I'm pretty sure this was not intentional. There are some downsides to a more active Penelope.

You know what they say about old age being a lot like infancy? Well, no one warned me that the reverse is true. Penelope has recently entered the grunting phase. Sometimes, you would think we were running a nursing home. The sounds are hard to describe, but I never knew a baby could make them. Sometimes they sound like animal noises, but a lot of the time they sound like cranky old men who are upset at the world. They seem to be a new part of her sleeping routine, and frequently they are accompanied by intense stretching sessions.

It's OFF! Yesterday, Penelope's umbilical cord stump fell off. It was, of course, anti-climactic. Katie found it floating in her onesie. There are still a few bits of it stuck in her belly button, but the big chunk is gone. It kind of looks like jerky. Surprisingly, there was no odor, despite the doctor's warning that it would stink before it fell off. Now comes the debate about saving it or not. I'm for saving, mostly to see what happens to it, but Katie is not a huge fan of keeping a rotten piece of flesh around.

It was a big weekend for us for getting ready for the baby.  Up until now, we hadn't really done much.  We had a car seat, but that's about it.  And the big items, a crib and changing table, we are getting from friends in June.  So the baby room had been looking very empty and sad since we moved in here.  But not any more!  Yesterday we went to IKEA (complete with Swedish meatball dinner, of course).  As usual, we spent about 3 hours there, but it was very successful.  We bought a small bookcase, a funky set of drawer

After years of having an outdated website that I threw together myself with PHP, I decided to join the modern era and transfer my website over to Drupal, an open-source content management system.  I've also decided to take a crack at blogging.  Mainly, I think this will be a way to keep track of interesting things that my soon-to-be-born daughter does.  Kind of like an online journal of interesting baby things.  Or, who knows, maybe I'll write about other stuff.  Or, most likely, I'll write about nothing.  Only time will tel
